Advertising Self-Regulation

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) was formed in 1912, as a vigilance committee to combat false and misleading advertising. While the Minnesota Bureau, the first in the nation, has grown and changed over the years, our focus on advertising review has remained the same. We believe that businesses should regulate their own advertising efforts, using ethics and truth in advertising as their guiding principles, and we are happy to help provide them the resources and education they need to do just that.

The BBB reviews numerous sources of advertisements (newspapers, television, Internet, and radio) each week to be sure advertisers are in compliance with the BBB Code of Advertising. We receive complaints of unfair ads from both competitors and consumers. If you want to file a complaint, click here, or email us at ask@bbbmnd.org. We review all complaints and, if within our purview, contact the advertiser and ask for substantiation, modification or discontinuation of the advertisement, so that it meets the ethical standards of the Bureau.

Advertising review is still a focal point of the Bureau's mission. We provide many services to members and non-members to assist them in providing their customers with truthful and honest advertising. For national advertising, advertisers or consumers should contact the Council of Better Business Bureau's National Advertising Division.
